Server Room & Comms Room Air Conditioning

Close control and commercial air conditioning for server rooms and comms rooms - designed, installed, maintained and repaired by F-Gas certified engineers, since 1973. Maintenance contract clients get 24/7 cover.

Rossair designs, installs and maintains air conditioning for server rooms and comms rooms across the UK - close control units, CRAC units and commercial split systems, with N+1 redundancy where the room cannot go down. F-Gas certified engineers, SFG20-scheduled servicing and 24/7 reactive cover for maintenance contract clients.

Server room cooling services

Design and installation

Heat load survey, unit selection and installation sized to the IT load and the room, not a rule of thumb. Close control units for critical rooms, commercial split or VRF systems for smaller comms rooms.

Redundancy and changeover

N+1 configurations with changeover controllers that rotate the duty unit and bring the standby in automatically, plus high temperature alarms wired to the people who need to know.

Servicing and F-Gas compliance

SFG20-scheduled servicing of coils, filters, fans, condensate and controls, with F-Gas leak checks and refrigerant records kept up to date.

Repair

Fault-finding and repair on close control and split systems. Contract clients get 24/7 cover with a 4-hour emergency response.

Upgrades and replacements

Replacing ageing or R410A units, or adding capacity when the IT load grows, phased so the room stays cooled during the work.

Why office air conditioning is not enough

Comfort air conditioning is built for people: it runs in working hours, removes moisture as well as heat and tolerates a few degrees of drift. A server room produces heat all day, every day, and the equipment cares about the air at its intake. Close control air conditioning is designed for exactly that load, holding temperature and humidity steady around the clock.

Who we work for

Offices, schools and colleges, NHS and care sites, retail and industrial units - anywhere a comms room or server room keeps the building running. For larger critical spaces, see mechanical and electrical services for data centres. Server room cooling can sit inside the same commercial air conditioning maintenance contract as the rest of the building.

Where we work

Maintenance contracts run from the Basingstoke HQ (Hampshire, Surrey, Berkshire, Sussex), the London office in Aldgate (London and the M25) and the Manchester base (the North West). See commercial air conditioning in London and Manchester. Installation projects are delivered UK-wide.

Server room air conditioning - common questions

Can I use a normal split air conditioner in a server room?
For a small comms cupboard, a commercial split system rated for continuous running can work. Comfort air conditioning is designed for people, though: it removes moisture as well as heat and is not built to run flat out all year. Larger or more critical rooms need close control units, which hold temperature and humidity within tight limits around the clock.
What temperature should a server room be?
ASHRAE recommends a server inlet air temperature of 18-27°C. Most server and comms rooms are set somewhere between 18°C and 24°C, with relative humidity kept roughly between 40% and 60% to avoid condensation and static. What matters is the temperature at the front of the equipment, not the room thermostat.
What is close control air conditioning?
Close control (or precision) air conditioning holds both temperature and humidity within narrow limits, typically ±1°C, and is designed to run 24 hours a day. It is the standard choice for server rooms, comms rooms and data halls, where CRAC units are the larger version of the same idea.
Do I need a backup air conditioning unit?
If the room cannot be allowed to overheat, yes. The usual approach is N+1: one more unit than the load needs, with a changeover controller that rotates the duty unit and brings the standby in automatically if one fails. Without it, a single fault can take the network down within hours.
How often should server room air conditioning be serviced?
Units running 24/7 are usually serviced at least twice a year, and quarterly for critical rooms. F-Gas leak checks run at the frequency the refrigerant charge requires. Rossair plans servicing to SFG20 and keeps the F-Gas records for you.
What happens if our server room air conditioning fails?
Maintenance contract clients get 24/7 reactive cover with a 4-hour emergency response. New enquiries get a callback within one working day. A temporary cooling plan for the room is worth agreeing in advance, so a failure has a known response.
