Rossair is a UK mechanical and electrical contractor delivering chiller, air conditioning and electrical work for data centres, with current projects in London and Manchester. Cooling plant, close control units and power are installed and maintained by directly employed, F-Gas certified engineers, with electrical work certificated to BS 7671.

Data centre cooling: chillers, CRAC and close control

Rossair installs, replaces and maintains the cooling that keeps data halls inside their temperature band: chillers and chilled water systems, CRAC and CRAH units, close control air conditioning and the pipework, pumps and controls that connect them. Replacements in live buildings are planned as staged changeovers so the load stays cooled throughout. See chiller and plant replacement.

Power and electrical

Power distribution, sub-mains, lighting and small power, containment, and the inspection and testing that goes with them, delivered by Rossair’s in-house electrical team and certificated to BS 7671. See commercial and industrial electrical services.

On-site solar PV and battery storage

Data centres carry large, constant electrical loads. Rossair also delivers commercial solar PV and battery storage, with DNO and G99 applications handled in-house, so on-site generation can be designed alongside the cooling and electrical work rather than bolted on later.

Server rooms and comms rooms

Not every critical space is a data hall. Rossair also designs, installs and maintains server room and comms room air conditioning for offices, schools and NHS sites, where a cooling failure takes the network down.

Where we work

Current data centre projects are in London and Manchester, run from Rossair’s London office in Aldgate and the Manchester base. See commercial air conditioning in London and Manchester. Installation projects are delivered UK-wide.

Frequently asked

Questions from data centre operators and contractors

What M&E work does Rossair deliver for data centres?
Rossair delivers chiller, air conditioning and electrical work for data centres: chiller installation and replacement, CRAC, CRAH and close control units, chilled water and refrigerant pipework, power distribution, lighting and small power, and planned maintenance of the cooling and electrical plant. Commercial solar PV and battery storage can be designed into the same package.
What is a CRAC unit, and how is it different from a CRAH unit?
A CRAC (computer room air conditioner) unit cools the room with its own refrigeration circuit and compressor, like a precision air conditioner. A CRAH (computer room air handler) has no compressor: it cools air with chilled water from a central chiller plant. CRAC units suit smaller rooms and standalone sites; CRAH units with chillers suit larger data halls.
Can chillers be replaced without taking cooling offline?
Yes. Chiller replacements in live data centres are planned as staged changeovers - one chiller at a time, with temporary cooling where redundancy is not enough - so the load stays cooled throughout. The sequence, isolations and fallback plan are agreed with the operator before work starts.
What temperature should a data hall run at?
ASHRAE recommends a server inlet air temperature of 18-27°C for most IT equipment. Many operators run nearer the top of that range to save cooling energy. The right setpoint depends on the equipment, the containment and the cooling design, so it is agreed with the operator rather than assumed.
Where does Rossair work on data centres?
Rossair’s current data centre projects are in London and Manchester, run from the London office in Aldgate and the Manchester base. The head office is in Basingstoke, Hampshire, and installation projects are delivered UK-wide.
Can Rossair add solar PV and battery storage to a data centre?
Yes. Rossair delivers commercial solar PV and battery storage, with structural assessment, electrical design, MCS-certified installation and DNO and G99 applications handled in-house. Designing it alongside the cooling and electrical work means the connection, metering and plant space are planned once.
