The work
Chichester College needed to replace an ageing chiller at its E Block that had reached the end of its operational life, with downtime a major concern during term time. Working with Carrier Solutions UK, Rossair installed a 140kW Toshiba Universal Smart X (USX) Edge modular air-source heat pump.
With the required unit available from stock, it was delivered within 48 hours, far faster than the typical eight-to-ten week lead time for equipment of this capacity. Installed in May 2025 and commissioned in June after two weeks of monitored checks, the system integrates with the existing BMS and was treated with an anti-corrosion coating for the coastal location.
Across two four-month periods before and after installation, the heat pump contributed to a reduction of 10,882 kWh per month, extrapolating to an estimated 43,528 kWh and a cost saving of approximately £8,700 over the period. The project won the 2025 HVR Award for Innovative Project, and Toshiba Air Conditioning UK filmed the installation.
The work sits inside a 20-year maintenance relationship with Chichester College Group. Rossair also supported Chichester College’s Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) bid and delivered the funded works.
