Delivering Efficiency, Compliance, and Air Quality for Industrial Environments

Why Industrial Ventilation Systems Matter

Industrial spaces generate dust, fumes, heat, and airborne contaminants that can affect workforce health, equipment performance, and operational efficiency. A well-designed industrial ventilation system is essential for:

  • Maintaining air quality and ensuring compliance with HSE regulations
  • Controlling temperature and humidity for machinery and personnel
  • Removing airborne pollutants and improving overall safety
  • Enhancing energy efficiency to reduce operational costs

Industrial ventilation - common questions

What is a Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) system?
Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) is a class of industrial ventilation system that captures and removes airborne contaminants (dust, fumes, vapour, mist) at the point of generation, before they reach the worker’s breathing zone. LEV is required under COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002) and must be tested and examined at least every 14 months under Regulation 9. Rossair designs, installs and maintains LEV systems to HSE HSG258.
What is HSG258 and does my industrial ventilation need to comply?
HSG258 is the HSE’s guidance document "Controlling airborne contaminants at work - A guide to local exhaust ventilation (LEV)". It defines the design, installation, commissioning, testing and maintenance standards for LEV systems. Any UK workplace using LEV to control hazardous substances must follow HSG258 - it’s the de-facto national standard. Rossair’s LEV designs meet HSG258 as standard.
How often does industrial ventilation need to be inspected?
Under COSHH Regulation 9, LEV systems must undergo a thorough examination and test (TExT) at least every 14 months by a competent person. High-risk installations (asbestos, blast cleaning) require shorter intervals. Routine PPM (planned preventative maintenance) on industrial ventilation is typically quarterly or six-monthly depending on contamination load. Rossair handles both the TExT and the PPM under one contract.
What types of industrial ventilation does Rossair design?
Rossair designs and installs Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) for dust/fume/mist capture, general factory ventilation for temperature and humidity control, fume cupboards and laminar flow benches for biotech/laboratory settings, kitchen extraction for industrial-scale food production, and clean room ventilation. We also retrofit existing systems with EC fans, heat recovery and smart controls for energy reduction.
Can industrial ventilation be retrofitted to reduce energy use?
Yes. Typical retrofit measures include replacing AC fans with EC (electronically commutated) fans for 20-50% motor energy savings, adding variable speed drives so airflow matches actual demand, installing heat recovery on extract streams, and integrating CO2 / VOC sensors for demand-controlled ventilation. Rossair scopes retrofit measures against measured energy use - typical paybacks are 2-4 years.
What is the cost of an industrial ventilation TExT inspection?
A TExT inspection cost depends on system complexity - number of hoods, ductwork extent, and accessibility. Small LEV systems (single hood, single fan) start around £400-£700. Larger multi-zone systems run into thousands. Rossair includes TExT in PPM contracts so the cost is bundled rather than billed per-visit. Inspection reports are delivered to the COSHH-required standard.
