HVAC System Sustainability

Sustainability at Rossair: Driving Energy Efficiency & Innovation

Rossair’s commitment centres on HVAC sustainability as core business practice. The company targets carbon reduction, energy optimisation, and sustainable business transitions across UK commercial and industrial sectors.

HVAC systems represent significant energy consumption when improperly designed or maintained. Rossair provides customised solutions enabling businesses to cut costs, lower emissions, and optimise system performance.

Sustainable HVAC Solutions That Make a Difference

Energy-Efficient Systems

High-efficiency heat pump chillers, heat recovery VRF, and advanced air handling units reduce consumption while maintaining comfort levels beyond traditional performance.

Intelligent Monitoring & Maintenance

Regular maintenance and performance monitoring ensure peak efficiency, minimise breakdowns, extend equipment lifespan, and prevent costly inefficiencies.

Building Management Systems (BMS) for Smart Efficiency

Automated control systems adjust HVAC performance based on occupancy and environmental conditions, delivering better comfort, lower costs, and a reduced carbon footprint.

Renewable Energy Integration

Solar-powered HVAC solutions and geothermal heating/cooling systems reduce fossil fuel reliance and unlock long-term savings.

HVAC sustainability - common questions

How can a commercial HVAC system reduce its carbon footprint?
A commercial HVAC system reduces its carbon footprint through five levers: (1) replacing gas boilers with heat pump chillers, (2) installing heat recovery VRF systems to recapture waste heat, (3) upgrading air handling units with EC fans and high-efficiency heat exchangers, (4) integrating Building Management Systems (BMS) for occupancy-based control, and (5) pairing HVAC with on-site solar PV. Rossair specifies and installs all five, with carbon measurement independently verified through the NCZ partnership.
What is a heat pump chiller and how does it cut HVAC emissions?
A heat pump chiller is a four-pipe system that produces both chilled water for cooling and hot water for heating from a single unit, recovering rejected heat instead of dumping it to atmosphere. By eliminating a separate gas boiler, a heat pump chiller cuts Scope 1 emissions and runs on electricity that can be sourced from renewables, lowering Scope 2 too. Real-world coefficient of performance (COP) is typically 3.5-5, meaning 3.5-5 kWh of heat per kWh of electricity input.
What is NCZ certification and why does Rossair’s certification matter?
NCZ (Neutral Carbon Zone) is an independent certification scheme that quantifies, reports and verifies an organisation’s carbon footprint. Rossair’s partnership with Neutral Carbon Zone provides independently verified measurement and a public Net-Zero Carbon (NCZ) certification. Currently Blue Status; Silver by end of 2026. The certification proves carbon claims are independently verified, not greenwash.
What is heat recovery VRF and where does it work best?
Heat recovery VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow with heat recovery) moves waste heat from rooms being cooled to rooms being heated, in the same building, simultaneously. It works best in buildings with mixed loads - offices with north and south-facing zones, retail with internal cold rooms, mixed-use developments. Typical energy savings are 25-40% versus standard VRF and 50%+ versus traditional heating + cooling split systems.
How does Building Management System (BMS) integration reduce HVAC energy use?
A BMS controls HVAC based on real-time occupancy, weather and zone conditions instead of fixed schedules. Typical savings of 10-30% come from setback during unoccupied periods, demand-based ventilation, optimised start/stop, free cooling and trend-data-driven tuning. Rossair installs BMS upgrades alongside mechanical replacements so the savings compound rather than fight each other.
Can Rossair help with Net Zero strategy for a multi-site estate?
Yes. Rossair has experience designing and delivering carbon-reduction roadmaps across multi-site estates, including NHS, education and commercial. The approach: an independently verified baseline carbon footprint, prioritised intervention plan (low-hanging fruit first), staged plant replacement aligned with capital cycles, and BMS/monitoring for ongoing verification. The Grand Plan partnership with Olympia Events is a current example.
What does it take to move from a net-zero ambition to real delivery?
Planning, trade-offs and delivery discipline - not just technology. On Rossair's Wembley Health Centre decarbonisation for the NHS, the decisive factors were a fully calculated RIBA Stage 4 design with carbon embedded in every decision, early engagement with the electricity network operator on capacity, acoustic design to satisfy planning, and phasing that kept a live clinical building fully operational while gas was removed from the site entirely. That is the difference between a carbon target on paper and a building that is actually off gas.
What is the "Grand Plan" with Olympia Events?
Rossair is engaged in The Grand Plan with Olympia Events - a long-term decarbonisation programme covering HVAC and building services across the Olympia exhibition estate. The programme illustrates how named, evidence-led carbon-reduction projects look in practice rather than greenwash. Decarbonisation at Rossair is a delivered project, not a target.
